Background of Employer


The Jordan Nutrition Innovation Lab (JNIL), managed by Mindset, a Jordanian consulting and social research organization, is presently seeking a Jordan-based Research Fellow. 


The Nutrition Innovation Lab is one of 20 Innovation Labs supported by the USAID Bureau for Resilience and Food Security. The aim of the Nutrition Innovation Lab is to address all forms of malnutrition, through policy-relevant research focused on the intersections between health, nutrition and agriculture. Through support from USAID/Jordan, the Nutrition Innovation Lab in Jordan will conduct research and capacity building activities that supports priorities of the Government of Jordan and the USAID Mission in Jordan.


JNIL is a four year activity that will generate evidence on the impact of the USAID-supported Community Health and Nutrition (CHN) program, whose aim is to improve the nutritional status of pregnant and lactating women (PLW) and children under the age of two by achieving measurable improvements in maternal, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN) and post-partum family planning (PPFP) and build human and institutional academic capacity to support Jordan’s infant and young child feeding (IYCF) research agenda. Two main objectives of JNIL are as follows:


Objective 1 is to develop and implement a rigorous research agenda and impact evaluation of the CHN program. There are three specific activities under this objective: 

1.1. Develop and implement an in-depth evaluation of the CHN program. 

1.2. Develop and implement rigorous nutrition-focused research, including secondary data analysis of large population-representative datasets.

1.3. Actively engage and collaborate with the CHN program to ensure quality implementation and evidence-based learning of best practice, through process and performance evaluation, cost-effectiveness and program sustainability assessments.


Objective 2 is to support Jordan’s maternal, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN) research agenda and build Jordan’s individual and institutional capacity. The proposed activities under this objective are outlined below:

2.3. Conduct annual ‘research to policy’ scientific symposia  


Description of the Position


The Jordan Research Fellow will be a professional who has the interest and the motivation to support the implementation of JNIL research in the area of IYCF and breast feeding in Jordan. Under the leadership of the JNIL country coordination, the Research Fellow will plan, supervise, monitor and assist both qualitative and quantitative components of the evaluation studies implemented by the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Nutrition at Tufts University.

The Research Fellow will be required to implement a One Team management and operations approach, where the Tufts NIL Team and Mindset implement under a single delivery unit committed to this project. The Research Fellow will be working closely with the Country Coordinator to achieve the technical objectives of the program. The CC will be reporting to Mindset’s Managing Director directly.


Roles and Responsibilities


The Research Fellow is expected to:

·        Ensure JNIL has an up-to-date understanding of the country’s socio-economic, health, nutrition situation, as well as key stakeholders.

·        Under the direct supervision of the principal investigators (PIs) at Tufts University and the country coordinator (CC), oversee technical aspects of the research and program evaluation that will support the USAID Mission and its implementing partner for the CHN program.

·        Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; review peer-review publications on supporting optimal infant, young child and maternal nutrition and health in Jordan and MENA region and its programmatic impacts.

·        Assist in the development of research protocols, survey designs and implementation, data management and analysis.

·        Support local capacity building through training of field survey team, supervise the research coordinators, supervisors and enumerators for data collection.

·        Oversee ethical considerations and necessary approvals of research protocols from review boards and government officials.

·        Oversee data collection (quantitative and qualitative), and data management process; play an active role in data descriptive and analysis with the study investigators; actively participate in data analysis plan discussions.

·        Support the CC and data collection team in day-to-day supervision of all aspects of study implementation, including supervision of field-based teams.

·        Data-driven monitoring of study progress and data collection, completeness, and quality.

·        Data-driven monitoring of collection, analysis, and quality of laboratory samples and data.

·        Regular review of data quality and coordination of query resolution in the field.

·        Generation and implementation of data-driven schedules for participant visits.

·        Provision of trainings to study staffs and data collection team. Monitoring of study supplies and equipment including electronic data collection tools and initiation of procurement as needed. Assistance in the development and testing of electronic data collection applications.

·        Documentation of key processes, events, trainings, supervision, and meetings during the course of research activities.

·        Maintenance of regular contact and update with the CC, PI and other study investigators on study progress.

·        Development and implementation of systems to continuously improve study implementation and data quality.

·        Develop manuscripts, journal publications and presentations at different national and international forums.

·        Actively participate in dissemination of achievements, learnings and evidence generated from different study projects implemented by the Nutrition Innovation Lab to local and international stakeholders and wider audience.

·        Assist the PI and CC to promote knowledge management and disseminate research activities and achievements with partners, collaborators and donors through regular publications and presentations, in-person and virtual meetings.
