Objective:
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Communications, and in close collaboration with the Coms team in Amman as well as the Press Officers in Dubai and Beirut, the Press Officer is responsible for making the medical and humanitarian action of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) known to the media, the public, institutions, vendors and key persons or groups In the MENA region.
The Press Officer will support the OCA communications, advocacy and recruitment objectives in the region in terms of acceptance, visibility, and leverage. He/she will develop a strong network of national, regional and international journalists based in the MENA region. He/She will also work on supporting MSF’s institutional and operational communications initiatives and projects of the MSF OCA MENA Regional Office as well as contribute to MSF’s global awareness, acceptance and visibility.
Tasks & Responsibilities ( including, but not limited to):
Communication:
- Reinforce support for MSF’s work by providing information to key audiences.
- Position MSF’s leadership in emergency medical response in the MENA region & globally.
- Produce/ assist in the production of all forms of communication materials in English and Arabic.
Media relations:
- Developing a Media engagement for MSF in the MENA, as well as an associated work plan to get MSF medical and humanitarian action known to the public domain and enhance MSF’s credibility and brand in Jordan and wider in the region.
- Ensure that MSF has a well-maintained and continually developed contact list of journalists and media outlets covering key media in the region – print, TV, radio, web etc. – and a successful process of communicating and maintaining regular contact and close collaboration with identified media.
- Daily monitoring and review of media reporting and trends, providing analysis for colleagues.
- When required, supporting crisis communications, in coordination with colleagues.
- Direct media relations – pitching, sending media materials, organizing and facilitating media interviews, briefings and press conferences; and/or field visits, facts/figures information sheets, human interest story opportunities, photos etc.
Translation:
- Manage the translation of MSF materials from English and Arabic and the opposite. This includes managing the outsourcing of translation as required, taking responsibility for accuracy and quality control.
- Upon request, provide support to Crisis Management Teams & Emergency Desks as an in-house (Arabic) translator for extremely confidential data.
- Manage translation to Arabic of MSF audiovisual material upon need and requests with relevant service providers, providing coherent translation for scripts, editing and proof-reading, final production quality assurance, adaptation.
- Review audiovisual material in English that include Arabic speech
Campaign, events and public engagement:
- Under the direction of the Head of Communications, help define messaging of campaigns.
- Design & implement public facing events in Jordan and the MENA countries where OCA operates.
- Act as key contact for external individuals, groups, institutions, health entities etc. interested in organizing events on behalf of MSF, or interested in having MSF representation at an event.
Regional/international engagement and back up support
- As per other communication team members, the Press officer is expected to actively participate in the regular calls/meetings amongst the MENA communication hubs and in the context of joint projects with other offices across the movement.
- As part of the internal back up system of the communications team, the Press & Community outreach Officer will back up other communication team members as required.
General/Other:
- Contribute to ensuring that MSF OCA MENA office work is clearly understood within inside MSF.
- Participate in and based on rotation systems manage the MENA comms teams’ weekly calls rotated with Beirut and Dubai, including proposing agenda items and taking minutes.
- Undertake other activities as may be required by the Head of Communications.
Conditions:
- One year contract - renewable upon performance and operational needs.
- Annual salary & remenuration package, based on Médecins Sans Frontières ( OCA) reward policy.
- Starting date: As soon as possible.
